(MITCHELL, IN) - Two Mitchell residents have been arrested for child abuse.
23-year-old Alisha Terrell and 31-year-old Michael Pemberton have been charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.
Court documents indicate that a 2-year-old was taken to Dunn Memorial Hospital on February 27th with multiple bruises and abrasions to her body, as well as a swollen tongue.
Investigators say the girl had had "acute rib fractures that could only occur when the chest is violently squeezed."
Lawrence County Deputy Prosecutor Tim Sledd says that the child is now in the custody of the Indiana Department of Child Services.
A trial for Pemberton has been set for 9:00AM on August 3rd.
Terrell will appear in court at 8:30AM on May 3rd for an initial hearing.
