Bill Smith died 1985, however his life, along with that of many of his friends', has been revived in the HBO mini-series, "The Pacific."
The series is based on books written by Marines Eugene "Sledgehammer" Sledge and Robert Leckie, concerning their experiences in the Pacific theatre during World War II.
Although the mini-series recently ended, all 10 segments of the show will air this Memorial Day weekend.
Smith, who isn't a major character in the show, played such a significant role in the story that a short biography for him was given at the closing of the show.
