(SEYMOUR, IN) - Federal health inspectors are investigating two egg-producing farms in Iowa, trying to determine the cause of a huge salmonella outbreak.
The FDA recall affects eggs produced since May 15th.
Rose Acre Farms in Jackson County is Indiana's largest egg producer and is not involved in the recall.
The company's Executive Vice-President, Victor Rigterick, says eggs remain in the food chain for less than 30 days, so the number of affected eggs is much smaller than has been publicized.
He says consumers should remember that eggs are a raw food product and those who handle eggs prior to cooking should wash their hands first.
Cooking eggs to 140 degrees will kill any bacteria present.
