(UNDATED) - The U.S. Census Bureau released data Thursday on the nation’s 2009 poverty rate.
It shows the number of people in poverty last year was $43.6 million or 14.3%, an increase of $3.7 million since 2008.
The number of poor Americans is the largest in the 51 years for which poverty estimates are available.
The poverty rate for the state of Indiana will be released later.
Kristin Seefeldt with the I.U. School of Public and Environmental Affairs, says the annual poverty rate calculation doesn't include in-kind income, such as food stamps.
