(UNDATED) - State officials are urging companies and other large volume water users in Southern Indiana to voluntarily reduce water usage by 10 to 15% due to the long dry spell throughout the state.
The request covers more than 20 counties that the National Weather Service has classified as under extreme or severe drought conditions.
Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Phil Bloom says that letters have been sent to users of more than 100,000 gallons per day.
He says that it isn't an overwhelming issue because outdoor water usage is down this time of year anyway.
The water shortage warning is the second most severe of the three drought advisory stages monitored by state agencies.
Counties currently on voluntary restriction status include Crawford, Dubois, Harrison, Lawrence, Martin, Orange, Perry and Spencer.
