(UNDATED) - A study for the Triple A Foundation for traffic safety finds 2 out of every 5 drivers admit to falling asleep behind the wheel, with 1 in 10 saying it occurred sometime in the past year.
The report was released for this week's observance of Drowsy Driving Prevention Week.
AAA Foundation President and CEO Peter Kissinger says the culture of our society needs to change so that motorists recognize the dangers of driving while fatigued and stop doing it.
Officials say sleepiness has the same effect as drugs or alcohol when behind the wheel; awareness is decreased, reaction time is slowed, and judgment is impaired.
