(STATEHOUSE) - With gas prices soaring, Democrats are reviving a proposal to suspend the taxes you pay at the pump.
Pump prices include Indiana's .18 cents-a-gallon gas tax and the 7% sales tax, which right now is averaging 29 cents more.
House Minority Leader Patrick Bauer says legislators should fold a summer tax holiday into the budget bill.
Speaker Brian Bosma says suspending the tax would cost more than triple what Bauer claims, and says Republicans will not spend a projected surplus until it's actually in hand.
Bauer and other democrats have often suggested suspending the tax when gas prices skyrocket.
The state did it once, in 2000, when Democratic Governor Frank O'Bannon suspended the tax by executive order.
