(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - A local disaster declaration has been issued by Monroe County Commissioners as a result of last month’s rainfall.
More than 10 inches of rain fell on the Bloomington area from April 19th through May 2nd, leading to the wettest April since 1850.
Jim Comerford, Director of the county's Emergency Management Department, says most of the damage suffered locally was to county roadways.
Some are still underwater more than a week after the heaviest rain stopped falling.
Few homes flooded in the wake of the storms, but the water rushed into Lake Monroe for days and eventually started gushing over its spillway.
Valley Mission Road, which ran across the spillway, was destroyed.
Indiana Conservation Officer Angela Goldman says the flooding is affecting recreational activities at the lake.
Most ramps are closed.
State officials will tabulate damage estimates prior to deciding whether to seek aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
