(UNDATED) - It’s mosquito time in Indiana. Some parts of the state are already seeing the pesky critters in unusual numbers.
Experts say heavy spring rainfall and flooding have created conditions ripe for mosquitoes.
The extended dryspell in different parts of the state is also aiding the breeding season.
Indiana Department of Health Surveillance Director Tom Duszynski says mosquitoes should be a concern any time they're among human populations.
He says once hatched, they're ready to feast on blood meals.
Duszynski says even small amounts of standing water in flowerpots are more than enough for mosquitoes to breed.
He urges residents to dispose of any standing water on their property.
Mosquitoes are most active between dusk and dawn.
People should wear long sleeves and long pants to avoid bites and seek out mosquito repellent that contains deet.
