(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - A ban on texting at the wheel takes effect July 1st, but it may take a lot longer for Hoosiers to break the habit.
Texting is more than a substitute for phone calls or emails, it's changed the way we live and drive.
Butler University Psychology Professor Mandy Gingerich says younger people in particular are less likely to think ahead, knowing they can look up directions or text someone no matter what time it is.
Gingerich says texting has become so ingrained it's almost an addiction, and the prospect of a fine of up to $500 dollars may just make people try to hide what they're doing.
She says that could just make the safety concerns worse.
