(BEDFORD, IN) - General Motors’ Bedford plant is adding another 58 jobs.
It's the automaker's second expansion of the plant in a year-and-a-half.
This time, the company is investing $49-million dollars in a new line to make castings for a new fuel-efficient transmission being built in Toledo.
GM Manufacturing Manager Arvin Jones credits unions and local management with working together to keep the plant competitive, in a period when the automaker has shrunk or closed plants elsewhere, including the stamping plant in Indianapolis.
The new jobs are expected within two years.
Jones won't say when production will begin. Mayor Shawna Girgis says even a few dozen jobs are welcome in a city still recovering from the closing of the Visteon Plant four years ago, a shutdown which wiped out nearly 700 jobs.
But she says what's equally significant is the sense of security that GM will stay put.
The Bedford announcement was part of a $2 billion dollar rollout of new investments in five states.
