(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has unveiled graphic images and messages that’ll appear on cigarette packaging come September.
The feds believe the messages may induce more than 200,000 smokers in the U.S. to quit during the first year of the campaign.
However, Indiana University Law Professor Antony Page believes cigarette makers may have a case for further litigation.
Page says tobacco companies may still be able to get certain provisions regarding the labels.
Page says it's a first amendment issue that may give tobacco companies leeway on the grounds of constitutionality.
Page says predicting court decisions is nearly impossible, but a decision in favor of tobacco giants could force the significant changes in labeling.
