(MARTINSVILLE, IN) - Officials held a pre-trial hearing Monday in the case of the teenage boy who shot a classmate at Martinsville West Middle School in March.
16-year-old Michael Phelps faces multiple charges in the shooting of 15-year-old Chance Jackson.
Phelps' Attorney Steve Litz says the prosecution filed a motion to increase the penalty by an additional five years because of the use of a handgun, a fact that he is not denying.
The judge also granted a motion that witnesses cannot testify if Phelps' intent was to kill Jackson.
Jury selection begins in Clay County on July 1st.
The trial is set to begin on July 11th with the jury being brought into Morgan County by bus every day.
Litz says he expects the trial to last one week.
