(Jasonville) - Indiana Rail Road Company is set to break ground on major improvements at the Hiawatha yard today.
The yard, in Jasonville, is the operational heart of the 500 mile IRR system.
The $65 million 5-year investment plan is to prepare for growth in its railroad traffic said IRR President and Chief Executive Thomas Hoback.
Hoback expects the company to grow 50 percent in the next 5 years with commitments to haul about 70 percent of the coal mined at Bear Creek.
"It's the hub of the wheel and will allow the company to modernize its facility and grow the number of local employees," said IRR spokesman Chris Ruhd.
Improvements include construction of a new locomotive maintenance shop, a parts warehouse, a 2-story yard office and storage warehouse and 4,000 feet of new track, laid in the railroad yard.
Headquartered in Indianapolis, the company, provides nearly 200 jobs in central and southwest Indiana and east-central Illinois.
