(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington inmate died Thursday after being released from jail.
Brian Scott Hilyard, 50, had finished his court hearing and was released from the jail Thursday afternoon.
Hilyard was arrested on charges of criminal trespass and public intoxication. He was released without bond, because of over-crowding at the Monroe County Jail. Hilyard was to appear in court at a later date.
Police took Hilyard downstairs from the courtroom, to the jail, around 3:20 p.m. Officers had to fill out release forms and Hilyard had to pick up his belongings, said Mike Pershing, chief deputy of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
Paramedics were called to the jail because Hilyard became unresponsive. He was taken by ambulance to I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital.
The coroner pronounced Hilyard dead 35-minutes later. Hilyard had pre-existing health issues but police would not say what they were.
Pershing said the case is under investigation and an autopsy and toxicology testing will be done.
