(MEDORA) - On Oct. 8, the town of Medora is “Going Pink with Hope,” a breast cancer awareness event and community day.
The goal of the event is to spread knowledge about breast cancer and prevention, raise funds to be donated for various cancer-related causes and provide a support system to help one another.
Last year's event was a huge success with the help of the Community Foundation of Jackson County, local businesses, participation of all the local churches, Medora Community School and all those in the community working together.
The 2011 event will begin with a 5-K run/walk at 8:30 a.m. Those interested in participating may register online at www.mag7raceseries.com, at the State Bank of Medora, Medora School, Qwik Stop, Krazy Katz or by contacting any committee member. T-shirts will be given to all those who participate (pre-register to insure the correct size), and first- and second-place medals will be given in all age categories.
A community walk will begin at 11 a.m. for those who want to walk in memory, honor or support of a loved one.
There will be a cruise-in with a $10 registration fee, and prizes will be given away throughout the day. Those who pre-register will be eligible for a special drawing.
Those attending are encouraged to order a pink T-shirt and will have an opportunity to see the pink tractor, pink propane truck, pink mud bustin' truck and Pink Panther.
The event will offer food, floral arrangements, handmade crafts and jewelry, homemade honey and goat milk soap, antique tractors, horse-drawn carriage rides, wagon rides to the newly restored Medora Covered Bridge, the longest covered bridge in the United States, hand and back massages, a silent auction, and a chance to win a hand-pieced quilt.
Free face painting and nail art will be available for children, and there will be carnival games, an inflated bounce house, and a balloon typhoon castle maze.
The barrel train will provide unlimited rides for a one-time fee of 50 cents. In the 237 Building, adjacent to the Medora Christian Church, Schneck Cancer Center will provide a take home kit for colon cancer screening, IU Health Bedford will provide osteoporosis screening, Heel Dexa and the American Cancer Society will provide information. The Wig Wam will assist women with hair concerns, and Indiana State Police will provide identification DNA kits.
Cancer survivors will be available for a question and answer session, and there will be a brief presentation about the history of the Medora Covered Bridge.
Ribbons of various colors representing all the different cancers will be posted on the Wall of Hope. Ribbons may be posted with names, pictures (copies only) and messages under "Gone but not forgotten," "Journey," or "Survivors." The Wall of Hope provides a support system for all those who have been affected by cancer.
Those attending the day's events are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and enjoy live music.
