(BEDFORD) - Mitchell Mayor Dan Terrell will replace Steve Gault as president of the board of directors of SOAR.
The Success and Opportunity at Reading program (SOAR) trains volunteers who are paired with adults who cannot read or struggle to do so.
When Terrell first joined the board, he was angry because the felt the school systems had failed those participating in the program. The anger soon turned into action and Terrell became more involved with SOAR.
Currently the program has 13 tutors and 8 students. Terrell would like to see those numbers double.
Terrell says it is estimated that around 750,000 people in Indiana cannot read well enough to fill out job applications, help children with homework or pay bills.
Terrell would like to increase visibility and awareness of problem of illiteracy and increase resources to improve the conditions and quality of life for residents in county.
Other SOAR board members include Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis, Judge Michael Robbins, Gene McCracken, Joann Johannes, Jamie Medlock, Jay Freund and Debbie Beeler.
