(MITCHELL) - Twenty-three young ladies have hopes of being the 2011 Persimmon Festival Queen.
Besty Mundy, the 2010 Queen, will relinquish her crown Monday night.
Kimbery Powell, chairwoman of the event, says several of the girls have participated before, but there are a lot of first-time participants.
"It's a lot of fun," Powell says. "These ladies are pretty busy, with school, sports, work and other activities, but they are giving this competition their all."
"This is a big event for the festival and I know the girls are excited." Powell says. "The judges will look at the girl's speaking skills, poise and personalities."
The contest begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Mitchell High School auditorium, where preliminary judging is open to the public. The cost to watch the contest is $2 per person.
The queens will be crowned Monday night at 6 p.m. at the Main Street Stage.
