(BEDFORD) - A bomb squad from Crane exploded several sticks of dynamite in a field on Ingram Road last night.
Jayson Hudson called police after he found a box of old dynamite in a barn on his property.
Lawrence County Police Capt. Jerome Hettle says he notified Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agents to see how to handle the situation. Agents told Hettle the area needed to be evacuated. Chief Bryan Bate of the NWSC Bomb unit was called and came to the scene.
"The dynamite was found in an old wooden box," Hettle says. "It had gotten wet and crystallized making it extremely dangerous. I was told the last time they shipped dynamite in a wooden box was in the 1950s."
Marshall Volunteer Firefighters were asked to come to the area in case the dynamite exploded.
Agents found 5 sticks of dynamite and two blasting caps.
Hettle was told because the dynamite was unstable the area needed evacuated. Marshall Volunteer Firefighters assisted with evacuating residents. Residents within 400 meters were asked to leave their homes, Hettle says.
NWSC Bomb Disposal teams removed the dynamite from the barn and took it to a field where they use another explosive device to destroy it.
