(BLOOMINGTON) - Otis Elevator may close the doors after 46-years-of business in Bloomington.
The company has not made an official notification, but reports from employees and company officials are pointing to a late to mid- 2012 closing, says Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan.
About 200 to 250 jobs will be lost.
According to a company news release, the plant has selected Florence, S.C., as a site for a new manufacturing center. The facility will produce designs, using green technology.
The company's official news release did not mention Bloomington, but it did say Otis would be consolidating much of its North American new equipment operations in Florence.
The Bloomington plant would also contribute senior management to the new facility.
The other cities named were Nogales, Mexico; Tucson, AZ and the company's worldwide headquarters in Farmington, CT.
When Otis was at its peak in 1989, the company employed 1,180. The company ceased manufacturing operations locally at the end of 2004. Much of the work was shifted to an elevator assembly plants in China and Mexico.
