(BEDFORD) - A record-tying number of teams — 104 — will take to Otis Park this weekend in the annual Claude Akins Memorial Classic Golf Tournament, according to Joey and Tom Elliott, who co-direct the tourney.
The tournament brings in about $35,000 a year and is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Bedford Recreation Foundation. The foundation uses that money for a host of causes, from annual scholarships and donations to the local Boys Club and Girls Club to longer-range efforts, such as improvements to Otis Park.
Typically the field hovers at 100 six-person teams. Last year 98 teams participated. The tourney has hit the 104 mark only a couple of times.
