(ORLEANS) - Orleans Town Clerk Robert Henderson is coordinating efforts for a national observance called, “9/11 Never Forget Project,” which is endeavoring to engage school children, educators, citizens, business owners, civic and community leaders in pausing to remember the horrific events which occurred 10 years ago this September 11th.
There is also a special community wide Remembrance Ceremony scheduled for Sunday at 6 p.m. at Orleans High School.
In the United States, Patriot Day occurs on September 11 of each year, designated in memory of the 2,977 killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. This year will mark the tenth anniversary of that event.
On this day the American flag is to be flown at half-staff at homes, government and public buildings. Americans are also asked to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m., the time the planes struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, Henderson said.
"On September 11, 2001, our country experienced a grave tragedy. Thousands of innocent Americans from diverse backgrounds and walks of life died in the terrorist attacks," he said. "Shortly after that day in 2001, people from all around America displayed American flags bringing the nation together. In many respects, it is our duty to remember those who were killed on that day. If we don't, memories of that day may fade with time. I believe it is our duty as Americans to never forget that day and remember all of the lives that were lost in the terrorist attacks."
The local 9/11 Never Forget Project is a way of remembering the victims of those horrific terrorist attacks. As part of this project, town officials and employees will be setting up American flags in historic Congress Square on Friday, September 9 and would like to encourage their fellow townspeople to consider doing the same. Henderson is encouraging those who live or have a business in visual areas along S.R. 37 and Maple Street to do the same.
The goal or hope is that an American flag be displayed outside every, home, apartment, office and store wherever possible, Henderson added.
"We do this honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms," Henderson said.
Those wanting more information on the local observance and or planned activities may contact Henderson at the Orleans Town Offices.
