(JASONVILLE) - A Shakamak Junior-Senior High School senior was struck by a car while walking across State Road 48 on her way to school Wednesday morning.
Wet road conditions and poor early morning lighting were to blame for the 7 a.m. accident, says Jasonville Police Chief Rick Van Horn.
The teen suffered head injuries and was taken to the school parking lot by ambulance where a helicopter flew her to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
The teen is listed in serious, but stable condition.
41-year-old Michelle Klausmeier, of Sullivan, was driving east on State Road 48 on her way home from work at Sony in Terre Haute when she rounded the corner near Hanna Field and hit the teen. Klausmeire told police it was dark and she did not see the girl crossing the street. Klausmeier tried to stop to avoid the student, but the roads were wet and she could not get her car stop before hitting the girl.
