(SEYMOUR) - A standoff between a Seymour man and police ended peacefully after more than six hours on Tuesday night.
Seymour Police Chief Bill Abbott says the incident began when police were called to a home on the 1000 block of South Park Drive at 12:22 p.m. to investigate a possible battery complaint.
Officer Jason Wynn went into the house and that is when a man pulled a gun. The man expressed some suicidal thoughts and when he reached for the gun Wynn decided to leave the house.
Seymour police have chosen not to reveal the identify the man. Chief Abbott would only state that "he is a former police officer from up north and a veteran." Abbott went on to say, "we believe he had several weapons in the house, but he never threatened any officers or anyone else."
Abbott said police were called to the residence on Monday and there were some issues during that call when the man also claimed he was battered.
Additional officers were called to the scene, including Seymour's SWAT team. Police blocked off the area and asked one neighbor to leave their home. The other homes nearby were vacant. Seymour Community Schools rerouted buses around the area so children could get home safely.
Attempts to contact the man through a public address system by Sgt. Jack Hauer, the department's hostage negotiator, failed, but the man did come to the door at one point, so police knew he was all right.
Eventually police decided to back off and call a family member. The man's son lives in Knightstown and he arrived a short time later.
Indiana State troopers assisted and Jackson County Lt. Andy Wayman was called to bring one of the man's grandsons to the scene. Other family members including the man's 96-year-old father, his daughter and son-in-law came, but were not able to make contact with the man.
