(ELLETTSVILLE) - A fire that started on a back porch destroyed a home at 4310 Deer Park Drive in Ellettsville early Wednesday morning.
Lori Owens home was destroyed but her and her 3 children are safe thanks to Neil Tremblett, a neighbor who saw the blaze and woke the family.
Tremblett noticed the flames after looking out his bedroom window around 1:30 a.m. and noticed a glow on the top level of a 2-tiered wooden deck on the back of Owens' house. He called 911 and then went to the Owens' to wake them up.
Ellettsville firefighters arrived four minutes after Tremblett's 911 call. They, along with firefighters from Bloomington and Bean Blossom township fire departments, were on the scene until 4:19 a.m.
Ellettsville Fire Chief Jim Davis said the blaze started in the corner of the upper deck. He has narrowed the cause to either an electrical problem or possibly careless smoking.
