(SEYMOUR) - A two-vehicle wreck Monday night on U.S. 31 south of Seymour left four people with serious injuries.
Three Austin teens and a Crothersville woman were hurt, Indiana State Police said Tuesday.
18-year-old John Hurt and a 17-year-old, were flown by helicopter from Schneck Medical Center in Seymour to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment.
Indiana State Police Trooper Chris Lockman said Hurt and another 17-year-old passenger were ejected from the car.
Police say, Hurt is listed in critical condition with serious head and internal injuries.
One of the 17-year-old passengers suffered neck and back injuries and listed in stable condition and the 17-year-old that was ejected from the vehicle was treated at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for a possible arm fracture and lacerations. He was released later that night.
Lockman said the 17-year-old that was ejected from the vehicle was wearing a seat belt, however, the force of the impact caused the seat belt to malfunction and it broke loose.
The wreck occurred around 7:30 p.m. Monday in the 1500 block of North U.S. 31, when the vehicle, driven by one of the 17-year-olds, was traveling southbound came through a curve, crossed the bridge over Interstate 65 and lost control of the vehicle, striking the concrete abutment, Lockman said.
The vehicle then skidded backward in the northbound lane of U.S. 31 and was struck in the rear by a van driven by 41-year-old Marla M. Brumett of Crothersville.
Brumett was not injured but her 18-year-old daughter, Carletta M. Plummer, was later treated at Schneck for non life-threatening injuries, Lockman said.
