(HURON) - Huron residents meet at the Huron Volunteer Fire Station Monday night to try and save their post office. Residents received noticed the post office may close soon.
Cynthia Klaiber, manager of post office operations for the U.S. Postal Service Terre Haute district, answered questions from the group.
Klaiber says there are approximately 3,700 post offices nationwide and 29 in her district that have met the initial criteria for possible closure. She told the group there is nothing residents could do to change the data gathered by the postal service and that flooding the post office with business will not help.
She told residents the only recourse they have is to complete a survey they were sent and show those making the decision how important the Huron post office is. The decision to close the post office will be made at the national level.
She also stressed contacting members of Congress and maybe some regulations could get changed.
One problem is that Congress required the U.S. Postal Service to fund pensions for its workers 75 years in advance. They had a $5.5 billion payment due Sept. 30 that was not paid.
The president gave a 90-day extension, but the postal service will probably not be able to meet the payment then either.
