Man Guilty of Killing Deer In City Limits

Last updated on Monday, October 10, 2011

(MARTINSVILLE) - 71-year-old Allen L. Shike pleaded guilty Friday in Morgan County Circuit Court to one count of criminal recklessness and one count of illegally taking a wild animal, after he shot two deer that were drinking in his pond.

He will also pay restitution to his neighbor whose fence was damaged by the bullets he fired within the city limits. He was also ordered to pay $500 to the state's Whitetail Replacement Fund.

The shooting happened on August 16. Shike told police he was having a bad day and when he came home to find the deer drinking in his pond, he went and got his rifle.

He told police he didn't mind the deer drinking from the pond, but they were tearing up the lining and moving the stones he had placed around his pond - that made him angry.

Shike used a .22-caliber rifle to kill the deer. He told police he later threw the gun in the river. The bullets went through the deer and through the fence of a neighbor.
