(WASHINGTON) - The RSVP Volunteer Center has announced Larry and Linda Bennett of Shoals as the October Volunteers of the Month.
The Bennetts will be married for 40 years in February, both are retired.
Larry worked for Buehler's Grocery Store and retired in 2009. Linda taught Family and Consumer Science (Home Economics) to junior/senior high school students in Shoals and after 37 years, retired in 2007.
Both were given the award because of their volunteer work at Loogootee United Methodist Church.
Linda has been crafting all her life and found her passion for quilting in 1988. She is an active member of the church's weekly quilting group. Donations from the quilts benefit many groups.
Recently she was an instructor at a quilting camp held at Rivervale (a Methodist campground).
Last week, she and Larry baked 450 cookies for the church youth. She has also helped with several on-going RSVP projects including making bears for children and the Pen Pal program.
Larry has been involved with numerous church responsibilities including Sunday School superintendent and Methodist Men's Group where he serves as president. Last year, he began volunteering with the church preschool and has found this to be his favorite. He assists the quilters with a variety of tasks, including taking the quilts in and out of the frames. This year he also became an RSVP Pen Pal.
Together they enjoy gardening and cooking. With Linda's passion for fabric stores, Larry has learned to enjoy "shopping" for quilting supplies. They are also involved with several Internet quilting groups.
The Bennetts believe that "volunteering keeps you involved with the life going on around you. It gives you a chance to give back with the skills you've learned throughout your life."
If you are age 55 or over and are interested in any of these volunteer activities or many others that are available, drop by the RSVP offices in the Community Building at Washington Eastside Park or call 254-1996. (Special to WBIW)
