(SALEM) - A woman dropping her children off at Bradie Shrum Lower Elementary Thursday morning struck a teacher and then drove away.
The accident happened around 8 a.m.
A teacher; 24-year-old Micah Robertson, of Salem; was walking a student into the school. Salem City Police Officer Eric Mills said Robertson was getting ready to step from the parking lot up onto the sidewalk in front of the main entrance at the school when she and the child were hit by the vehicle.
A woman driving a black early 2000s model SUV, possibly a Ford Explorer, hit Robertson as she tried to push the child she was with out of the way. The child was struck during the incident and was checked by the school nurse as school officials notified the child's parents. The child was not injured, just scared.
Robertson complained of shoulder and knee pain. Police say she was taken to St. Vincent Salem Hospital for treatment and was treated and released.
Mills says the most alarming part of the incident is that the driver knew she hit Robertson.
A man witnessed the accident as he was walking in front of Robertson. He told police that he confronted the driver who asked, 'Is she OK?' and then accelerated and drove away.
The vehicle was last seen entering Martin Heights Subdivision.
Authorities want to find the driver and are asking anyone who has information to contact the police department at 883-5100. Callers may remain anonymous.
The driver could face a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.
