(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington police uncovered two active methamphetamine labs early Wednesday morning - one in a woman’s minivan and one in a shed beside the woman’s house.
The bust ended with half a dozen people arrested, one officer hospitalized and two children taken into state custody.
Officers stopped a minivan near the intersection of West Third Street and Gates Drive because the driver had failed to use a turn signal around 1:45 a.m. During a search, they found an active methamphetamine lab bubbling on the floorboard, and one officer was treated and released from the hospital after being overwhelmed by the fumes.
The driver, 34-year-old Marie Ellen Carter, told police she needed to get home because another active meth lab had exploded in the shed beside her house. Carter told police she had gotten a call telling her the lab had exploded.
Police followed her to her home at 1998 W. That Road in Bloomington, where they found several people smoking marijuana on the front porch and a man covered in chemicals from the explosion, according to Bloomington Police Lt. Bill Parker.
Parker said the meth lab police found in Carter's shed appeared to be a "cold lab," which means no fire was used to manufacture the drugs, so the explosion was not as dangerous as it could have been.
Carter gave police permission to search her house. Inside they found marijuana, paraphernalia and two children, ages 3 and 6. Child Protective Services took custody of both.
Six adults were arrested on the following preliminary charges:
Carter, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a precursor and maintaining a common nuisance.
Roger Dale Grubb, 29, of Bloomington, neglecting a dependent, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and visiting a common nuisance.
Billy Jack Grubb, 33, of Bloomington, manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of a precursor, possession of paraphernalia and visiting a common nuisance.
Samantha Rae Hendrix, 18, of Bedford, visiting a common nuisance.
Aaron O'Malley-Starr, 20, of Bloomington, visiting a common nuisance.
