Hunters Take 40 Deer During Hunt At Spring Mill

(MITCHELL) - Hunters took more than 40 animals during a controlled deer hunt at two area Department of Natural Resources properties on a two-day hunt last week.

Mark Young, Spring Mill State Park Property Manager, says 34 deer were taken at the park. On Monday, 45 hunters reported to the park, and 27 deer were killed. On Tuesday, 22 hunters reported, and seven deer were taken.

The number is more than double the total taken during the last Spring Mill hunt. At Cave River Valley Nature Preserve, Young says that nine deer were taken. On Monday, 10 hunters reported that they killed eight deer. On Tuesday, five hunters reported and one deer was taken. Cave River Valley, near Campbellsburg, is managed by the Spring Mill staff.

Hunters who take deer in a DNR controlled hunt can keep the animals for their own use or donate them to food pantries. The hunts are intended to thin the deer herds, thereby protecting plants and other animals from the problems caused by having too many deer in a specific area.

Spring Mill and Cave River Valley will be closed again on Nov. 28 and 29 for another hunt.
