Martinsville Man Arrested After SWAT Standoff

Last updated on Thursday, November 17, 2011

(MARTINSVILLE) - A SWAT standoff that lasted nearly four hours ended in the arrest Richard Simmons of Martinsville.

Police brought Simmons out of the home on a gurney.

SWAT surrounded the home of Sonja and Will Robinette at 3260 Centennial Road, Wednesday morning after Simmons got into a gun battle with police who were serving a warrant on burglary and other charges.

All area schools were placed on lockdown.

The officers involved were a Joint Task Force. Members included one federal agent, two deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff's Department and one officer from the Franklin City Police Department.

Simmons was wearing a bullet resistant vest and he was armed with an AK-47 and a handgun.

The gunman and officers ended up in the basement in different rooms. Worried they were lacking firepower, the officers reported that they felt trapped.

Police on the scene sent in a robot carrying protective gear for the officers. The robot was sent in a second time with tear gas.

The plan worked, and the officers escaped unharmed.

Police say Simmons fired upon the SWAT team officers that were in the house. Simmons was shot twice in the vest and was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
