(MITCHELL) - The Mitchell Community School Board heard good news Monday night from principals.
Steve Dorsett, principal at Burris Elementary told the board about "Blessings in Backpacks". The program gives children who receive free or reduced lunches the opportunities to take home $80 worth of nutritional food.
Each week the students receive food to take home in their backpacks. 37 states participate in the program.
Studies have shown that students that participate in the program have higher test scores, better attendance and improved health.
Mitchell High School Principal Sean Vanderventer told the board about notifying parents about school attendance using the school reach program.
Every day around 10 a.m. parents will receive a phone call notifying them that their children are not in school.
The school reach program is a pilot program at the high school and the plan it to implement the program school wide. School officials are also looking at using the Harmony program which allows parents to receive emails in addition to phone calls.
Mitchell Junior High School Principal Darrin Farris told board members about the Student Incentive Program.
The incentive program awards students with prizes for excellence in grades, attendance, no disciplinary actions and teacher's choice.
The awards are given each grading period. Prizes have been donated by local merchants and residents. Farris says the program gives student incentives to succeed.
