(UNDATED) - Police are warning the public about phone or email scammers attempting to lure elderly residents into wiring bail money to family members supposedly jailed in Mexico.
Area officers have fielded numerous calls about the scam in the past six weeks.
The scammers tell people that a grandchild or other young family member is being held in a Mexican jail and needs money wired to get out.
The scammers also intimidate their potential victims, saying something bad will happen if other family members are notified.
