(BEDFORD) - Shawswick Middle School students are filling the request of a military Staff Sgt. Justin Kemp, formerly of Bedford.
Students are putting together care packages to be sent to soldiers stationed overseas. Patricia Macy, family and consumer science teacher at the school, is overseeing the project.
Kemp, who is the grandson of Fred and Linda Herthel, asked Bedford residents remember the soldiers by sending letters and care packages. Kemps has 24 troops in his platoon.
Collection bags were placed in every classroom about four weeks ago and students ended the drive on Friday. Macy says students brought in 5835 items.
Because there are so many items students are also sending packages to Capt. Thomas Peabody's troops who is also in Afghanistan.
The student council is working in partnership with the school's Junior Beta Club to carry out the effort. In addition, she said her classes will bake about 300 cookies to be sent to soldiers.
Kemp and Peabody are over-whelmed with the support of their home town.
