(MARTINSVILLE) - The Morgan County Prosecutor has filed charges against standoff suspect 27-year-old Richard Simmons.
During the video arraignment Thursday, Simmons told the judge he had no job, no car, no bank accounts, and he therefore needed a public defender.
When asked what was the most valuable thing he owned, Simmons replied, his guns. He was appointed public defender William Van Der Pol.
Simmons is facing two counts of attempted murder and one count of wearing body armor during the Commission of a Felony.
Officers went to the home on Centennial Road Wednesday to serve an arrest warrant on Simmons when gunshots rang out, pinning four officers in the basement.
Police say Simmons, wearing body armor, used an AK-47 to shoot at the officers. Nearly four hours later, a SWAT robot helped the officers escape, and Simmons was taken into custody.
Simmons listed a home in Fairland as his residence. Police said he was dating a woman who lived in the home where the shootout took place.
He is being held on $1 million bond. His next court date is Feb. 22 and a jury trial date of March 19th.
ISP Sgt. Curt Durnil says the case is still under investigation and other charges are possible.
