(DUBOIS COUNTY) - A recent study says almost 4 out of every 10 Indiana offenders return to Hoosier prisons within three years of their release. Most of them are for drug-related crimes.
The Dubois County Corrections Center is expanding its effort to provide more help and offer classes at the center to motivate offenders to stay crime-free and drug-free.
Megan Durloff, rehabilitation facilitator at the Center says cognitive behavior therapy can reduce the number of offenders who return to prison by 30%.
The Center will be offering a new 13-week class that uses cognitive behavior therapy.
Cognitive behavior therapy is the treatment of various disorders related to mood, personality, anxiety, substance abuse and others that are associated with mental health.
Community Corrections staff are working on getting a 3 month jail time reduction incentive approved for offenders who take the class.
Keeping offenders from committing crimes again will also save money. In 2010 Indiana spent almost $680 million on its prisons.
Community Corrections provides the local courts with alternative sentencing through work release, day reporting and community service.
