(UNDATED) - The first snow of the season caused some problems across the state Tuesday. Wet snow fell heavily at times as a storm system began moving away from Indiana.
The snow was short-lived, but dropped 1 to 2 inches of snow along and north of a line from Crawfordsville to Indianapolis to Richmond. An inch or less of snow was expected south of the Interstate 70 corridor.
Road conditions were generally good, though a four-car crash on Interstate 74 in Hendricks County shut down the road for a short time. There were no injuries in that incident.
The first measurable snow played havoc with drivers and kept the Greene County Sheriff's Department swamped with more than two dozen wreck calls before noon.
Most of the wrecks - at least 20 - were reported in the eastern portion of the county and about half-dozen in the western part, according to Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce.
None of the wrecks were serious, most were slide-offs, Pierce said.
He estimated about an inch of snow had accumulated east of the White River by midday.
There had been no road closings, but several roadways on State Roads 45, 54, 58 and U.S. 231 were temporally closed to allow wreckers access to ditched vehicles.
Lawrence County only had a few reports of slid-offs, but nothing serious.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high near 37, with a west wind between 5 and 8 mph with a low around 28. Thursday is predicted to be mostly sunny, with a high near 46 and very windy with south southwest wind between 9 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
