(MITCHELL) - Four days of hunting eliminated 48 deer during controlled hunts at two Spring Mill State Park and Cave River Valley Nature Preserve, near Campbellsburg.
The final deer hunt wrapped up Tuesday. But nasty weather left the final two days relatively unsuccessful, according to Spring Mill Property Manager Mark Young.
The goal of the hunts is to thin deer herds to protect plants and other animals from the problems caused by having too many deer in a specific area
On Monday, 29 hunters showed up and killed two deer at Spring Mill. On Tuesday, 21 hunters took out three deer. At Cave River Valley, six hunters Monday didn't take any deer, and Tuesday's lone hunter didn't kill anything either.
During the first two days of the hunt (Nov. 14-15), Young said 34 deer were taken at the park. On Nov. 14, 45 hunters reported to the park and 27 deer were killed. On Nov. 15, 22 hunters reported and seven deer were taken.
At Cave River Valley Nature Preserve, nine deer were taken the first two days. On the first day, 10 hunters reported and they killed eight deer. On the second day, five hunters reported and one deer was taken.
The numbers are more than triple the total taken during the last Spring Mill hunt. In 2009, 15 deer were taken during four days of hunting.
The good news with the hunt is that it has seemed to thin the herd enough that deer sightings, especially on Ind. 60 East, are down.
