(PAOLI) - 39-year-old Bud Campbell, of North Vernon was arrested after displaying a handgun in Paoli Thursday morning.
At 8:24 a.m., the Orange County Sheriff's Department received a report of a man sitting in a vehicle with a gun on East Water Street. Deputies responded to the corner of East Water Street and Southeast First Street and found Campbell sitting in a 1995 red Subaru.
The sheriff's department reports Campbell had a semi-automatic handgun in plain view and made a movement with his hand toward the gun when deputies opened the driver's door of the vehicle. Deputies arrested Campbell without incident.
Campbell was taken to the Orange County jail and booked on charges of possession of a handgun by a violent felon, a Class B felony; possession of methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a school or day care facility, a Class B felony; two counts of possession of a controlled substance, both C felonies; possession of a handgun without a permit, a D Class felony; operating a vehicle as a habitual traffic violator, a Class D felony, and possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor.
The investigation continues.
"Incidents like this are becoming far too common in southern Indiana and throughout the nation," Orange County Sheriff Richard Dixon said in a prepared statement. "More and more, we are seeing people involved in drugs arming themselves. Thankfully, we had enough manpower at the scene to keep this from escalating into a situation in which a deputy or an innocent bystander was injured or killed."
