(MITCHELL) - Newly elected Mitchell City Council member Gerald Tolliver has passed away Thursday evening. Tolliver a life-long Mitchell resident will be sadly missed.
"He was a wonderful man and friend," said Mitchell Mayor Gary Pruett. "This is a shocking event and a sad sad day. This was a man who truly loved Mitchell and the people and all he wanted to do was serve his community."
Tolliver spent Thursday visiting with his son Kevin and his grandchildren, Pruett said.
"He was napping and just never woke up," Pruett said. "Gerald had several health problems and would have his good days and bad days. But this was totally unexpected."
Tolliver was born on March 8, 1949 and was proud to be a hometown candidate for council. The retired from Mitchell High School teaching sociology, government and economics after 40 years. He was chairman of the Mitchell Persimmon Festival in 1989 and 1991. He was also a member of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge. He won the Mitchell Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year Award In 2002.
He is married to Patty Mann Toffiver and has three sons and 10 step-children. He loved to travel, spend time with his family and was a folklore enthusiast.
