(VALLONIA) - Starve Hollow Lake that’s been plagued for decades by shallow waters is getting a new lease on life.
The state Department of Natural Resources said crews removed about 31,200 cubic yards of accumulated sediment from the lake as part of the lake restoration project at the Jackson-Washington State Forest.
The DNR says the sediment removal has returned the lake to the same condition it was in more than 70 years ago when it opened in 1938.
The dredging work was the first phase in a four-phase project that will restore between 20 and 40 acres of the 145-acre lake.
Workers are prepared to go ahead with the second phase of the project, which will see the removal of accumulated sediment from around the banks of the campground and boat rental areas.
The dirt that was removed wound up on a farmer's field and on property the state Department of Natural Resources own.
The project will improve the public's enjoyment of the lake and its campgrounds and also improve fishing and recreation on the lake.
