(AVOCA) - An Avoca teenager who fell about 35 feet from a limestone block on Saturday remains in critical condition at Riley Hospital for Children, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Rescue workers credit the teen's little brother for saving the teen.
The 13-year-old suffered multiple skull fractures in the fall that happened in the 300 block of Pinewood Drive, according to Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chad Hayes. The area has several stacks of limestone blocks, similar to what's seen off Ind. 37 near Patton Hill.
Hayes said when Marshall first responders arrived at the scene, the youth was conscious at the bottom of the block from which he fell. Rescue workers were able to walk down a nearby incline to reach the teen and placed him in a basket and carry him up the hill.
The boy then began to lose consciousness and started having problems when they got him to the ambulance. The ambulance took him to Ind. 37, where he was flown by a Lifeline helicopter to Riley in Indianapolis.
The teen and his 8-year-old brother, were riding bikes in their subdivision when they got off their bikes and walked to the limestone blocks that are remnants from an old quarry, Hayes said.
When the 13-year-old fell, his little brother ran to get help, which Hayes said which probably saved his life.
Assisting at the scene were rural metro ambulance crew and Oolitic VFD.
