(UNDATED) - The United States Secret Service is offering tips to avoid coming in contact with counterfeit money.
The amount of counterfeit money is expected to rise during the holiday season.
Andy Cecere with the U.S. Secret Service office in Indianapolis, says the number of counterfeit bills in circulation is going up because of improvements in technology. Cecere says 15 years ago, only one percent of all counterfeit money was made using inkjet printers and similar technology. Now, he says, close to 70 percent of counterfeit money is made with that technology.
Cecere says to inspect your money once you receive it. He says to look for the watermark to the right of the president's portrait as well as a thread to the left of the image.
If you believe you have received counterfeit money, Cecere says to contact the secret service officer or the police.
He says while counterfeit money goes up in the holiday season, counterfeiting is still relatively low in Indiana and around the country.
