(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Board of Works tabled a motion to approve the final change order for the Plaza Drive North project.
Mayor Shawna Girgis requested to review the final order line-by-line with her staff, to make sure everything is in order, before the board approved final payment.
The board also approved a medical determination officer service contract for TASC. INDOT now requires CDL license holders to have a yearly agility test. The contract will allow TASC employees to go to Public Safety in Bloomington for the test.
The board also approved the purchase of a new TASC bus. INDOT will contribute $40,000 toward the purchase of the $46,900 plus purchase price. The old bus will either be returned to INDOT or be sold by the city.
The board received several requests from residents.
After a study by Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, the board denied a request by Charles and Betty Ray, who live in the 1700 block of N Street, to place speed bumps in the alley that runs east and west, north of their home. The Rays wanted the speed bump to slow traffic in the alley, allowing them to enter and exit their driveway. However Parsley says he did two studies in the area and saw no reason why the Rays could not get in and out of their driveway safely. He also added the city frowns on speed bumps because is hinders snow removal.
Glenda Snow, who lives in the 2600 block of 26th Street asked for the placement of a street light at the intersection. She says the area is dangerous and at night approaching motorist cannot see the intersection. Chief Parsley agreed. He says there is a blind curve right before the intersection and motorist can't see the intersection until their headlights shine on it, and then it is too late to avoid an accident. The board approved to place a street light at the intersection.
Guy and Linda Hazen, who live on Smith Road, also requested a street light, saying the area is just too dark. But Parsley says Smith Street is a dead-end street and one light would only light a small area, and there are no sidewalks in the area. The board denied the request.
In other business the board:
Approved the recommendation of Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner to make current positions to permanency for Battalion Chief Stephen Haverly, Fire Inspector DeWayne Turpen, Lieutenant Jay Faubion, Senior Firefighter Michael Beedie, Firefighters 2nd Class Toby Tincher. They also approved a six month evaluation extension for Captain Scott Gillespie.
Granted permission for Mayor Girgis to sign a contract, so work could begin on a high-pressure sewer on John Williams Boulevard.
Granted approval of the Inter Agency Agreement between the city and Hoosier Uplands Economic Development - IT Labor Services.
Approved the bid for Amy Phipps to purchase a trencher from the city for $7,499.50.
