(MARCO) - Indiana State Police say excessive speed was to blame for a fatal accident east of Marco on Wednesday morning.
Jay A. Stephens, 27, of Lyons, died from internal injuries after flipping his car on County Road 1000W, just south of County Road 610S, according to Indiana State Police Trooper John Yung.
Stephens was traveling northbound on CR 1000W in a 2012 Ford Pickup at a high rate of speed when his vehicle began sliding on the gravel road, and partially ran off the east side of the road. He then veered back across the road and went off the west side of the road, overturning and coming to a stop in a bean field.
Stephens was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.
Yung was dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:30 a.m., but noted the exact time of the accident has not been determined due to the location being remote.
"It is believed to have occurred sometime during the early morning hours," Yung wrote.
The vehicle was totaled due to rolling through the field, and the hood of the truck was several feet from where the vehicle finally rested.
As a result of the overturning, debris from the truck covered the truck's path across the bean field.
The accident is still under investigation pending the results of toxicology tests.
Yung was assisted by the Greene County Sheriff's Department, Sandborn Volunteer Fire Department, Linton Fire Department, Lyons Volunteer Fire Department, and Greene County Coroner Sherri Wilson.
