(BLOOMFIELD) - This week, for the second time in the past year, criminal charges have been filed in connection with the theft of prepared hot dogs from Bloomfield’s The Picnic Basket.
Arrest warrants have been issued for a couple that told police the reason for the hot dog thefts was because they were hungry.
26-year-old Ashley Jo Hancock, of Plainville, faces a charge of theft, while her finance', 30-year-old Billy Jo Utt, of rural Dugger, has been charged with receiving stolen property, according to a probable cause affidavit that was filed in Greene Superior Court.
According to police, Hancock and Utt entered the store on Nov. 15, 2011 at about 9 p.m. to buy some cheese because they were hungry. However, Hancock is alleged to have concealed the hot dogs underneath the tray used to carry the liquid cheese before going to the checkout counter, where Utt paid for only the cheese.
After leaving the store, the couple sat down on a picnic table in front of the store and ate both stolen hot dogs and cheese product before leaving the area. The act was caught on surveillance video that was turned over to police.
Last June, 37-year-old Michael G. Pitcher, of Bloomfield, found himself in trouble with the law when he was arrested and charged with theft for stealing a hot dog dipped in nacho cheese from the same store during the early morning hours.
