(UNDATED) - The Girl Scout Cookie program will begin on January 7.
Every year, thousands of girls across the area gain valuable knowledge while providing the community with a special treat -Girl Scout cookies.
Since 1917, the Girl Scout Cookie activity has become a famous annual event that has helped girls develop important leadership skills they will use throughout their lives. The Girl Scout Cookie Program, an integral part of Girl Scouting's Business and Economic Literacy initiative for girls in grades K through 12, helps girls develop five skills for a successful career, including goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.
The Girl Scout Cookie Program also provides valuable experiences that build girls' self-confidence and help them develop their own personal leadership style. Essentially, girls run their own business. The entire troop sets a goal and follows a plan leading toward that goal. Girl Scout troops use funds from the cookie activity to fund a service project or to plan for an exciting trip.
Girl Scouts across central Indiana will also sell cookies for Operation: Cookie Drop, which benefits men and women serving in the military.
Girls will ask customers to purchase Girl Scout cookies, which will be distributed to soldiers who train and are processed out of Camp Atterbury, along with soldiers from the Indiana National Guard, Army Reserves, Marine Corps Reserves, and Naval Reserves from across central Indiana.
Last year, more than 70,000 packages of Girl Scout cookies were delivered to soldiers to thank them for their sacrifice while serving our country. Girl Scout cookies come in eight flavors, including a new variety, Savannah Smiles, a cool and crisp lemon wedge cookie, with just the right number of lemon chips to deliver tiny bursts of flavor. Savannah Smiles are a tribute to the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting, which began in Savannah, Ga. Classic favorites will also be offered, including Do-Si-Dos, crisp and crunchy oatmeal cookies with creamy peanut butter filling; Dulce de Leche, a sweet, cookie with milk caramel chips and stripes; Samoas, a tender vanilla cookie, covered with caramel on top and bottom, and then rolled in toasted coconut, and striped with a rich chocolaty coating; Tagalongs, cookies topped with creamy peanut butter and covered with a chocolaty coating; Thank U Berry Munch, cranberries provide a tartness in these cookies sweetened with white fudge chips; Thin Mints, thin wafer covered cookies with a chocolaty coating, made with natural peppermint; and Trefoils, shortbread cookies.
Girl Scout cookies will be delivered beginning the week of January 30 and will be sold at booths at local retailers and financial institutions through mid-March. Girl Scout cookies will be delivered slightly earlier this year, so that customers may enjoy them while watching the Big Game that's being hosted in Indianapolis. Special booth sales for the Big Game will be held exclusively at Marsh Supermarkets throughout central Indiana the weekend of February 4.The cost is only $3.50 per package.
Girl Scout cookies may be ordered directly from participating Girl Scouts, by calling toll-free 855-GSCIN-4U or 855-472-4648, or by visiting girlscoutsindiana.org.
Customers who buy cookies from their local Girl Scouts can be assured the proceeds will directly benefit Girl Scouts in their community. A portion of each package of Girl Scout cookies sold goes to Girl Scout troops to fund activities such as trips, hands-on science and technology activities, and community service projects. Girl Scouts of Central Indiana receives a portion of the proceeds to fund scholarships for summer camp, recruitment and training of adult volunteers, and to support council-wide initiatives.
