IU President Michael McRobbie presented the award to Baker Saturday at a musical celebration of Baker's 80th birthday.
The Indianapolis native has been named a Living Jazz Legend by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and has served as musical and artistic director of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra since its inception.
This is his 45th year of teaching at IU. He's credited with 140 recordings as a performer, composer, arranger or conductor and has written 70 books and more than 2,000 compositions.
McRobbie says IU will match all donations up to $100,000 made to the David N. Baker Jazz Scholarship Fund.
